Police Officer Goes Viral with Stunning National Anthem Performance.

After his stunning rendition of the national anthem at a men’s basketball game, West Virginia University police officer Carlton Smith became an internet sensation.

On January 12, while on duty at the WVU Coliseum, university administrators urgently approached Smith. They needed someone to sing the national anthem in just five minutes, as the scheduled singer was delayed by snow.

Officer Smith, a 28-year-old with the West Virginia University Police Department for four years, is well-known among his colleagues for his singing talent. He even reached the Hollywood round of “American Idol” 13 years ago. Despite his experience, the unexpected request to perform for the Coliseum’s 14,000 spectators caught him off guard.

Recalling the incident, Smith said, “They asked if I was Carlton and said they needed a big favor. I requested a glass of water, and a cheerleader kindly brought it to me. Then they led me to the court and told me to start singing as soon as my name was called.”

Smith’s performance has been viewed over 2 million times on YouTube. Off duty, Smith continues his childhood hobby of singing in church and performs with a band during open mic nights. “It’s my passion,” he shared.
