Our Only Son Shocked Us by Announcing He Wants to Get Married—And He’s Just 22 Years Old

Our only son left us gobsmacked when he announced he wanted to get married hes only 22! But my husband and I decided not to object; after all, wed married young ourselves. My husband had just turned 22, and I was only 19. Perhaps its simply meant to be. Besides, we liked his fiancée. Emily studied with our son Henry at university, and the two were inseparable.

Once it became clear their minds were made up, we began to prepare for the celebration. Given that Henry is our only child, we felt it was only right to give him a proper wedding.

As is traditional, my husband and I paid a visit to Emilys family, our soon-to-be in-laws. We knew very little about her only that she lived with her mother in a small village near Oxford, and wed seen her a handful of times with Henry. We phoned ahead, of course, to make sure theyd be expecting us.

My husband picked up a bouquet of flowers, I baked a Victoria sponge cake, and off we went to meet Emilys family. The first thing that struck us when we arrived was how immaculately tidy their garden was roses in bloom, the hedges perfectly trimmed.

The house itself was old but spotlessly clean. We were greeted at the door by Emilys mother, Mrs. Margaret Harris. We liked her instantly a charming, lovely woman. Margaret invited us in, and the food shed prepared was delicious, clearly made with care. We chatted merrily, and Margaret proved to be warm and gracious. But when it came to discussing the wedding itself, things stalled. Margaret confessed a little embarrassed that she simply couldnt contribute financially. Emily looked mortified, and Henrys face fell. The wedding wasnt something Henry wanted for himself, but rather for Emily, since it had been her dream for years.

My husband and I agreed not to scrap the idea. We assured Henry wed cover the expenses, and told Margaret to invite as many of her loved ones as she wished. After all, guests rarely come empty-handed, and their gifts would help cover the cost of their seats at the reception. Margaret was hesitant, but in the end, we convinced her to support the childrens happiness.

The Wednesday before the wedding, there was an unexpected knock at our door. It was Margaret, looking nervous. We welcomed her in for tea, but it took her a while to find her words. At last, she produced a white envelope from her handbag filled with pound notes. Shed been so uncomfortable with our offer that shed taken out a bank loan to pay her share. We pleaded with her to return the money; we didnt want her saddled with debt, especially knowing how humbly she and Emily lived. But Margaret stood her ground her mind was made up.

The wedding was a true celebration. Henry and Emily beamed with joy. That day, Margaret surprised us again she looked radiant, with her hair elegantly styled, flawless makeup, and a gorgeous dress. She was only 45, divorced, and had raised Emily alone. At the reception, she was simply glowing, and it wasnt just the wine or music that lit up the room.

It wasnt lost on my husbands younger brother, Edward, either. Edward, now 46 and divorced, had spent the last decade working abroad in Germany but had come home just for Henrys wedding. He barely took his eyes off Margaret all day. Afterwards, he admitted hed decided to stay in England a while longer and I could guess exactly why.

The very next Sunday, we were making the same drive, this time for another proposal Edward had fallen for Margaret. Things went splendidly between them. Before a few months had passed, theyd married and Edward took Margaret back with him to Germany.

So now, my old in-law has become family in a whole new sense. Margaret is truly a wonderful woman and deserves all the happiness in the world.
