I dont want any other daughter-in-law, and you do as you please! Thats what Mother said to her son.
When John was finishing university, he decided it was the perfect time to marry his first love from secondary school, Emily. Emily was not only pretty but also kind-hearted and clevershe was working on her dissertation at the time. The two young people agreed theyd tie the knot as soon as their studies were over.
John made up his mind to tell his mother about his plans for marriage, but she had no intention of giving him good news. His mother declared that he was to marry Alice from next door or no one at all. She pressed her son to chooseWhats more important: your future, or your feelings? She was a woman who had always imagined her boy becoming a man of stature.
Alice, as it happened, came from a well-to-do family and had fancied John for ages. John, on the other hand, only had eyes for Emily, whose family was of modest means. Worse still, Emilys mother had a foul name about the neighbourhood. What would the neighbours whisper if he chose her?
I wont have any other daughter-in-law, you hear me! Do as you will! was all his mother would say.
John spent long nights reasoning with his mother, but she remained unwavering. In the end, she threatened to disown him if he married Emily. John faltered, lacking the courage to defy her wishes. For another six months, he continued seeing Emily, but their relationship slowly faded away.
In the end, John married Alice. She truly loved him, but they decided against having a grand weddingJohn couldnt bear the thought of Emily stumbling upon their wedding photographs. Alices parents were wealthy and welcomed John into their sprawling house. They even did their part to boost his career. But John never found happiness.
He did not want children. When Alice came to realise shed never persuade him to have a child, she filed for divorce. By that time, John was forty, and Alice thirty-eight. She later remarried, had a child, and at last found contentment.
John often dreamt of marrying Emily; he tried to find her, but to no avail. It was as if she had vanished from the earth. Later, he learnt from an old friend that after their parting, Emily had married the first man to come alonga brute who, in a dreadful twist of fate, beat her to death.
After this, John moved back into his parents old flat, drinking himself into oblivion. He would sit for hours, gazing at Emilys picture, unable to ever forgive his mother.
