My brother demanded the money I’d spent years saving, and when I refused, our mother reacted in the most appalling way imaginable

I live with my mum and juggle two jobs. I pay for my own groceries and utilities, since mums entire pension goes toward supporting my older brother. I work hard to save up for my own flatits a real balancing act, trying to cover the bills and still put aside enough for my dream home. Despite all the hurdles, I stick firmly to my goals and rely on discipline and effort to get there.

Not long ago, my brother came to me asking for money to put down a deposit abroad. Deep down, I knew hed never pay it back, so I very calmly said no. I explained that I needed every penny to buy a flat myself. Of course, he didnt take it well and went straight to mum to complain.

My brothers finances are, to say the least, shaky. He works as a taxi driver and does odd repairs around town, so his income is never steady. He and his wife seem to spend without much thoughtalways ordering expensive takeaways and splashing out on luxury items. Their lifestyle means they barely scrape by, even though theyve got three children and no proper place to call home.

Ive always focussed on saving and managing my money sensibly. Im perfectly happy with my old mobile, whilst my brothers wife is forever browsing for the latest models on credit. When I refused to lend him money for his deposit, he was offended and told mum straight away.

Mum tried persuading me to help him out, even though hed never paid back what he owed before. She made a generous offer: if I gave him the money, shed leave me her flat. Still, I turned her down. I dont want to live waiting for an inheritance.

Mum respected my choice, but things took a turn when my brother and his family decided to move in with her to save money. They ignored my situation entirely, leaving me without a roof over my head. Mum thought Id be fineafter all, I had some savings. My brother cut off contact altogether.

Despite all the stress and tension at home, I dont feel guilty about my decision. I truly believe I did what was right for meputting my own future and dreams first, and carefully managing every pound Ive worked so hard to earn.
