I was raised by my grandfather, as I knew very little about my mum, and my dad had left us years ago to chase an unsuccessful career in music abroad. All through my childhood, I often envied my classmates, whose parents showered them with smart new clothes and tasty treats. Although my grandfather worked tirelessly at two jobs, we couldnt afford much, so I made do with hand-me-downs and just a handful of toys. On my birthday, I would dream of getting a large fire engine or perhaps a games console.
Hoping to get a bit of magic, I wrote a letter to a magician well ahead of the big day. But on the morning of my birthday, all I found beneath my pillow was one of my grandfathers old socks with a single chocolate sweet tucked inside. Feeling hurt and a bit let down, I burst into tears. My grandfather did his best to comfort me, saying, Dont be sad, lad. Dont you see how lucky you are? This isnt just any old sock its magic. Every morning, itll have a sweet in it. Thats how it will always be! The magician made you a wonderful gift; he happened to find my sock lying around, gave it a spell, and now its magic.
I wiped away my tears and stared at the sock in amazement. From that day on, every morning, I truly did find a chocolate sweet in the sock. I proudly told all the other boys and girls at my nursery about my magical sock, and they couldnt help but feel a touch of envy. Years slipped by, and eventually, I learned the truth behind it all, but I didnt hold it against my grandfather for his little white lie. If anything, I was moved by the love and effort he put in to try to make me happy.
When I grew up, finished university, and landed a good job, I never forgot my grandfather. I kept living with him and my own family. On my most recent birthday, I gave my grandfather a new sock decorated with a green apple. He was over the moon and laughingly claimed that now every morning a magic apple appeared in it. The magical bond between me and my grandfather stayed strong, filled with love and gratitude for our special gifts to each other.
