What about the flat, Mum? You promised me! Youre ruining my life!
You wont believe the drama weve had lately. My husband and I were over the moon when we found out our son Will was getting married. Just before the wedding, we pulled him aside and told himeven swore him to secrecythat we were planning to gift him a flat. He was absolutely thrilled. Honestly, I think all his mates heard about it before the end of the day; he was that excited. Everything was going swimmingly as we got ready for the big day, but then disaster struck out of the blue.
Our daughter, Emily, was rushed to hospital straight from work after suddenly becoming very unwell. You can imaginemy husband and I dropped everything and ran straight there. After a few tests, the doctors told us she had a tumour and needed surgery straight away. The shock, I cant even describe. Of course, we needed a fair bit of money, and we needed it fast. Thankfully, wed caught it just in time.
Buying that flat for Will was now completely out of the question. Every penny we could scrape together was going towards Emilys treatment. And I have to say, we were so grateful for the support from family and friends who came to our side. No one could stand by and do nothing, and everyone chipped in what they couldsome even pressed money into our hands and told us not to worry about repaying them. Together, we managed to cover the costs for the operation.
But what really knocked me sideways was what Will said next.
So whats happening with my flat? You promised! Youre ruining my life.
I honestly nearly fainted when I heard that come out of his mouth. How could he say something so self-centred? Emilys his sisterthey grew up together! How could he put his wedding and her surgery on the same level? I didnt know what to sayI was just stunned. But he didnt stop there.
Why does she always get everything, and I get nothing?
That was it for me. I lost it and shouted at him, told him I didnt want to see him right then. After that, he packed up his things and moved in with his fiancée. We didnt speak for two weeks. Not a word.
During that time, Emily had her surgery. Thank goodness everything went well, and a few weeks later she was able to come home. I never breathed a word to her about what her brother saidwhy upset her when she was already dealing with so much? Its just too embarrassing. And Will, well, he never rang, never checked in on his sister. Not a single call. Seems like getting that flat was far more important to him than his own family. I just cant wrap my head around it.
