The police station was quiet during the morning shift. Around 10 a.m., a seventy-year-old woman confidently walked in, leading an unusually plump reddish dog on a leash. The pet wagged its tail, bouncing slightly, appearing far too energetic.
“Good morning. I need to speak to your supervisor,” she said calmly.
The officer on duty was confused.
“Maam, are you filing a report?”
“No. I have a secret to share. A very important one. Its about my dog. And possibly something bigger…”
“Your dog?” he repeated, glancing at the animal, which was now attempting to climb the front desk with its tongue lolling out.
“Yes… You see, lately, shes been… how do I put it… excessively cheerful. Far too much.”
“Maam, if somethings wrong with your pet, the vets across the street.”
“No!” she cut in sharply. “You dont understand. I live alone. Im with her every day. Somethings different. Shes not just happyshes acting like… like shes on something!”
The officer frowned.
“You’re saying your… dog… is on drugs?”
“I dont know! But I need someone to check her. I feel theres more to this.”
An awkward silence fell. One junior officer muttered, “Should we call a medic? Or… social services? This ladys not right.”
But the senior sergeant, a seasoned officer, suddenly said, “Take her to the interrogation room. Ill talk to her.”
Thats when the police uncovered something terrifying.
Sitting across from the sergeant, the woman explained while her dog bounced at her feet like a coiled spring.
“Lets start from the beginning. How long has this behavior lasted?”
“About a week. Before, she was sluggish, calmnormal for her age and size.”
“What do you feed her?”
“Only one brand. CanBest senior formula. Same routine: one cup morning and night. Filtered water. No treats. We walk twice dailymorning in the park, evening by the lake.”
“Are those areas monitored?”
“The park has patrols. The lakes quiet.”
“Where do you buy the food?”
“The same local store. I even have a discount card. But the last batch was an online orderdelivered. Same packaging, same flavor… but days later, she started acting wild.”
The sergeant sent the remaining food to the lab. The dogs bowl was also examined, and vets tested her for substances.
Two days later, the report confirmed traces of synthetic stimulantsdisguised as fat-soluble additivesin the food. The packaging was counterfeit, though the brand was legitimate.
Further tests showed the dog had trace amounts in its system, explaining its hyper behavior.
Investigators traced the tainted batch to a warehouse distributing small shipments of “enhanced” pet food. Criminals had laced it with low doses, intending to create dependency in pets, pushing owners to keep buying.
Unknowingly, the elderly woman had triggered a major investigation. Her dog wasnt alonetwelve more cases surfaced nearby.
Raids followed, targeting stores and suppliers.
The sergeant later thanked her:
“Maam, you may have saved countless families.”
He handed her an official commendation.
Under the table, the dog dozed off post-detox.
“I hope shell be lazy again soon,” the woman smiled.
“Well, if not, well be watching… just in case.”
They both laughed.
