Winter had transformed Williams garden into a landscape of soft white frost, but his loyal dog, Dukea towering English Mastiffwas acting strangely.
Rather than nestle into the large kennel William had lovingly built for him last summer, Duke stubbornly chose to sleep outside, exposed to the chill. William would often watch from his window, a tightness in his chest growing each nightnever before had Duke behaved this way.
Every morning, William walked outside to find Duke eyeing him with a tense gaze. Whenever he neared the kennel, Duke would plant himself between William and the entrance, letting out a low, uneasy growl, eyes pleading as if to say, Please, dont go in there. For a dog who had been his steadfast friend all these years, it was deeply unsettlingwhat secret was his closest companion hiding?
Determined to discover the truth, William concocted a small schemehe coaxed Duke into the kitchen with the promise of a hearty slice of roast beef. With Duke shut inside, howling anxiously at the back door, William approached the kennel and stooped to peer inside. His heart seemed to stop as his eyes adjusted to the darknesswhat he saw inside sent a chill down his spine.
Curled up beneath a faded blanket, a tiny kitten shiveredits fur filthy, body trembling, breath barely stirring. Its eyes barely fluttered open, exhaustion and cold etched across its little face. Somewhere, Duke had found the kitten and, rather than driving it away or ignoring its plight, hed chosen to protect it, sleeping outside so the kitten would not be frightened, keeping vigil at the door as if he guarded the rarest treasure.
William held his breath and reached into the darkness, gently lifting the frail creature to his chest. In that very moment, Duke bounded toward him and pressed against his shouldernot growling, but tenderly, as if offering to help.
Youre a good boy, Duke William whispered, clutching the kitten. Far better than most people Ive met.
From that day forth, the garden belonged to not just two friends, but three. And the kennel William had made with such love found its true purpose againas a warm, safe home for souls in need of rescue.
