While Our Children and Grandchildren Squeeze Into a Tiny Flat, My Son-in-Law’s Parents Enjoy Their Spacious Apartment and Carefree Life

So, let me tell you whats been going on with my daughter and her family. She married, but unfortunately, we havent had much luck with our son-in-law or his parents. We do everything we can for the kids, but on his side, they contribute absolutely nothing. Its actually been eight years theyve been married now, and the situation hasnt changed a bit.

When it came to sorting somewhere for the kids to live, his parents pretty much just shrugged their shoulders and said, Nothing to do with us. Not so much as an offer of help. In the end, we had to move out and buy a flat for the kids ourselves. I didnt want to do it, honestly our old place was lovely, warm, sturdy brick walls, all that. But what could we do? I just wanted my daughter and her family to have their own home. We got it all sorted, did the place up, bought them furniture, but not a penny from his parents.

And Im always helping out with the grandkids too. My daughters on maternity leave with the baby, the oldest has just started Year Two, and Im the one driving him to school. Its just not realistic for her to wake the littlest, get everyone dressed, and out the door for school in less than an hour! So, its me and Grandad taking it in turns, both of us always pitching in to raise our grandchildren.

But as for our son-in-laws parents, they always act like its nothing to do with themfull-on hands-off. I sit and wonder, honestly, how some grandparents can be so indifferent.

Theyve been like that since day one. Just imagine, they didnt even give their own son a single pound towards the wedding. I actually rang them before the big day, suggested we meet up to talk things through since our children were getting married. And do you know what she said? What if they split up in a month? Seven out of ten couples split soon after the wedding, thats what the statistics say!

In the end, my husband and I paid for the wedding ourselves, gave our kids a flat to start their life, and his parents showed up like total strangers, handing over a sad little envelope with £100 in it. And yet, my son-in-law still finds things to ask for.

We bought them a flatwell, a little studioeight years ago. It was plenty for two at the time, but now two kids have arrived, and obviously, its tight as anything.

I do wish my son-in-law would take a bit more initiative. Ive said, Well, if you cant make more money yourself, maybe your parents could help out? But he just shuts it downI cant ask them to do that! That was his answer.

So I offeredIm happy to bring it up with them, if you want? But he wouldnt let me, wouldnt even let me mention it.

I just dont get it. He thinks its shameful to ask his own parents for help, but hes perfectly comfortable taking from us for nearly a decade. Why cant he get out and earn more himself? People manage to buy houses somehow. I tell himYoure young! There are loads of ways to find opportunities. Try for a second job, or even go abroad for a bit of work if you have to.

And now hes got my daughter worrying, ringing me up and telling me not to interfere, that his parents are just like that, theyll never change, and they wont help out.

It does my head in. His parents live comfortably, go off on fancy spa breaksmeanwhile, you cant even mention anything to them. Apparently, our son-in-law wont allow it. What a devoted son, right? But does he spare a thought for me and my husband, always chipping in?

I just wish things were different for them, really.
