My best mate, Charlotte, and I have been inseparable since we were little. We went through nursery and school together, and even ended up at the same university. Thats where I met a charming, good-looking guy. I honestly fell head over heels for him, but life had other plans. He happened to notice Charlotte one dayshe wasnt just pretty, she was truly captivatingand he instantly fell for her.
One afternoon, Charlotte popped round and asked if Id mind if she flirted with him, since she felt something special too. I hesitated, then told her it was fine, even though I was secretly in love with him. In that moment, I basically handed over the love of my life to my best friend. Time marched on, and Charlotte and I both settled down, started families, and had kids of our own. My old feelings for him faded away, and my attention shifted to my family.
Out of the blue one day, Charlotte rang me up and asked if Id cover for hershe was heading out for a secret rendezvous. I couldnt figure out why her husband shouldnt know about it. Thats when she confessed to me that shed fallen for another man, someone she said she simply couldnt live without. Still, she didnt plan on divorcing her husband; apparently, he was a great provider, absolutely adored their children, and treated her really well.
I genuinely couldnt get my head around her actions. Her husband is a loving dad, successful at work, and just a lovely bloke. Why would she betray him like this? If he had been cold or taken her for granted, I suppose I could understand her reasons. But considering all the affection and support he gives her, I can’t see why shed chase after risky new excitement rather than nurture the wonderful relationship she already shares with him.
