When I stepped into the lift in our block of flats, there was already a woman inside holding the keys to my apartment.
At first, I thought I must have made a mistake.
But no, the keyring was unmistakablea small blue heart that my sister had given me years ago.
The woman looked to be in her forties, had short dark hair, and carried a no-nonsense handbag over her shoulder. She stood calmly, as if this were nothing out of the ordinary.
The lift began to move upwards.
My heart pounded in my chest.
Excuse me, I began. Those keys… where did you get them?
The woman glanced at me.
Then at the keys.
Then back at me.
And who are you? she asked, her question landing like a slap.
I live in flat 12, I answered.
She froze for a moment.
Then said quietly, Thats odd.
Why? I asked.
Because I do too.
The lift stopped at the sixth floor, but neither of us got out.
Inside, silence settled.
Ive lived there for four years, I said.
She gripped the keys tighter in her hand.
I signed a lease last month, she replied.
I looked at her. A lease? With whom?
She opened her handbag and pulled out a folder.
Inside was a copy of a tenancy agreement.
My address.
Flat 12.
Silence filled the space.
Who gave you the keys? I asked.
The landlord, she answered.
Who?
George.
My stomach twisted.
George was my cousin.
He had told me I could stay in the flat temporarily, until he returned from abroad.
He owns the flat, I said softly.
She nodded. Yes. He told me the place was vacant.
The lift came to rest at our floor.
The doors slid open.
We both stood motionless.
Then she said, Maybe theres been some mistake.
Maybe.
We walked down the corridor.
The door to flat 12 waited in front of us.
She raised her keys.
I did, too.
Both keys looked exactly the same.
A strange hush filled the air.
Sometimes the worst feeling isnt when someone lies to you, but when you realise you might never have known the truth at all.
I looked at her.
Shall we open the door? I asked.
She sighed. Yes.
Tell me honestly… If you found out someone had given your home to someone else, would you calmly try to uncover the truthor would you lose your temper straight away?
Sometimes, its only when we face confusion and uncertainty that we realise how important honesty is, both from others and within ourselves.
