– We’ll be staying with you for a while, since we don’t have enough money to rent our own place! – My friend told me.

I am a woman who never stands still. Even at sixty-five, I manage to explore new places and meet fascinating people. Memories of my youth bring a mixture of happiness and sorrow. Back then, you could go on holiday wherever you wished. You could head to the seaside, pitch a tent with mates and coworkers, or cruise along the river. And all of it could be done for little more than a handful of pounds.

But those days belong to a world that has slipped away.

Ive always loved making new acquaintances, whether it was at the beach or in the theatre. Many of the people I met have remained friends for years.

One evening, my husband and I were perplexed by an odd telegram that had arrived. We hadnt planned on travelling, and we certainly werent expecting company. But at four in the morning, someone rang our doorbell. When I opened the door, I was struck dumb with astonishment. On the doorstep stood Susan, two teenage girls, an elderly grandmother, and a gentleman. Theyd brought mountains of luggage. My husband and I were frozen in disbelief. Eventually, we let the unexpected guests inside.

Susan turned to me and said, Why didnt you leave for us? I sent you a telegram, didnt I? Besides, taxis arent free! Sorry, but I had no idea who sent it, I replied. Well, I had your address, so here we are. I just thought wed trade letters, nothing more.

Susan explained that one of the girls had finished school that year and was heading to university. The rest of the family had come along to support her.

Well be staying with you! We havent got money for rent, and your flats right near the city centre!

I was stunned. We werent even relativeswhy should we let them stay? I had to feed them three times a day. Theyd brought some food, but never cooked anything themselves. I was left playing hostess to everyone.

After three days, I couldnt take it anymore. I asked Susan and her family to find somewhere else. It didnt matter where. The situation blew up into a thunderous row. Susan started smashing dishes, screaming hysterically.

I was left utterly appalled by her behaviour. Eventually, they departed, but managed to steal my dressing gown, several towels, and, incredibly, even a large pot of cabbage stew. I still dont know how they managed it, but the pot simply vanished!
