I used to have high hopes that when Mum retired, shed finally move to the countryside and leave her spacious three-bedroom flat to me and my husband!
Let me tell you about my neighbour, Linda. Shes 68 now and used to live alone in her lovely three-bedroom flat. Quite recently, Linda decided to rent out her place and set off on a trip.
Her daughter came over and started venting:
What is my mother thinking? Shes let me down so badly! Now my mother-in-law is yelling at me, saying Ill lose my mind in old age just like Mum. She says, The apple doesnt fall far from the tree. Only the other month, my husband and I took out a car loan, and were already two months behind. I was really counting on Mum to help us out! But shes rented out her flat and gone off travelling!
I looked at Alice, completely baffled. Why would her mother be responsible for paying their car loan? But Alice carried on:
My mother-in-law is furious that were still living with her in her flat, while my Mum’s spare flat is being rented out!
I knew Alice was hoping for some sympathy from me, but honestly, I think Lindas done nothing wrong. She absolutely deserves to enjoy her life as she likes! Why do people assume that when a woman retires, shes obliged to devote her entire life to her children and grandchildren? Thats hardly fair! So I asked Alice:
Why dont you and your husband rely on yourselves instead? Why didnt you spend your fifteen years of marriage saving up for your own home? If you had, your mother-in-law wouldnt have anything to complain about.
Alice explained,
I was so hoping that once Mum retired, shed move to the countryside and I could finally have that three-bedroom flat!
At that point, I decided to tease Alice a bit.
Suppose Linda finds someone and gets married? Remember your friend who went on holiday to Spain, met a man, and now lives there happily? Maybe your mum will do the same!
Alice stared at me, completely taken aback. Id recently seen some pictures Linda had posted online, relaxing and living life to the full. I was truly delighted for her. She did exactly the right thing. Age is no barrier to happiness, and its never too late to embrace new adventures or find joy.
In the end, life isnt about waiting for others to make us contentits about finding happiness on our own terms, no matter how old we are.
