I always hoped my mum would retire, move to the countryside, and leave her spacious three-bedroom flat in London to me and my husband!
Let me share a story about my neighbour Margaret. Shes 68 now. She used to live alone in her airy three-bedroom flat. Just recently, Margaret rented out her flat and set off on an adventure.
Her daughter came to me and began complaining:
What is my mum doing? Im so disappointed in her! Now my mother-in-law is shouting that Ill go off my head when Im old too. She says the apple doesnt fall far from the tree. And my husband and I just took out a car loan! Were two months behind on payments. I was counting on Mum to help! But Mum let us down, rented out her flat, and went travelling!
I looked at Emily with surprise: why should her mum cover their car loan? Emily kept talking:
My mother-in-law is furious that we live with her, and my mum just let her flat, instead of helping us!
I sensed that Emily was hoping Id sympathise with her. But, honestly, I believe Margaret did the right thing. Shes entitled to live her life the way she wishes. Why do people think that, once a woman retires, shes obliged to devote herself entirely to her children and grandchildren? Its simply not fair.
So I asked Emily:
Why dont you and your husband rely on yourselves? On your own capabilities? Why didnt you spend your fifteen years of marriage building up to buy your own home? That way, your mother-in-law wouldnt have reason to complain.
Emily explained:
I really thought that when my mum retired, shed move out to the country and just let us have the London flat!
And then I decided to tease Emily a bit:
What if Margaret found herself a husband? You know, I had a friend who went on holiday to Spain, met a lovely man, married him, and is happily living there now. Perhaps Margaret might do the same?
Emily just stared at me, speechless. Id actually seen photos of Margaret recentlyshe looked content and full of life, enjoying herself thoroughly. I was happy for her. She did exactly what she needed to do. Age is no barrier to happiness or to experiencing new and joyful things.
In the end, its important to remember: happiness doesnt come from fulfilling others expectationsit comes from doing what feels right for you. Sometimes, the best way to help your loved ones is by showing them that its never too late to embrace life and pursue your own dreams.
