My maternal grandparents bought my mother a plot of land with an unfinished house. It was as soon as my parents got married. Before I was born, my mother decided to earn money to finish the house, so she went abroad to work. She spent all the money she earned on repairs in the house. Meanwhile, my father worked at his job and ordered craftsmen to fix the house.
As soon as the house was livable, my mother returned. Two years later, I was born. I had a happy childhood: toys, entertainment, loving parents. For my fifth birthday, I was given a puppy.
That’s how I spent my time at school, and later I entered and graduated from the medical faculty. This year I received my diploma.
In March, my father died. My mom and I could not recover from the pain. My father was buried with full honors. After the funeral, my paternal grandparents came to us. I thought they wanted to console us… But what I heard surprised me. They told my mom that half of the house belonged to them.
– Why would they do that? “I worked abroad for years, invested all my energy,” my mother replied.
– “Half of the house belonged to our son, so it goes to us,” they continued.
“We went home. My mother made herself some tea and then sat in the kitchen for a long time crying. I couldn’t hold back my tears either. Not long ago, we were all so happy…
In the morning, my grandparents called us again. I thought they wanted to apologize for what they said. But no… They continued to talk about dividing the house. My friend’s father worked as a lawyer, so we decided to go to him.
The next day we met with my grandparents in the presence of a lawyer. Their screams could be heard throughout the cafe where we were sitting. I was ashamed that they were my father’s parents.
The lawyer told them that they could not claim any part of the house and that it was very mean of them to demand anything from my mother and me. My grandparents have just recently lost their son, and they are acting as if nothing has happened. How dare they encroach on someone else’s home? I can’t understand it in my head.
