Victoria Had Prepared Everything for the Harvest and Eagerly Set Off to the Village, Only to Be Shocked to Discover the Entire Crop Had Already Been Gathered

Two years ago, my daughter Emilys grandmother passed away, leaving her a cottage in the countryside just outside the village, complete with a generous garden and a vegetable patch. Emily often reminisces about the days she spent there as a little girl, joyfully helping her grandmother around the house and playing outdoors. Every weekend, our entire family, including my mother-in-law, would visit to enjoy the fresh country air and the fruit from the garden. My relationship with my mother-in-law had always been straightforward, without any quarrels or misunderstandings.

As harvest season approached, Emily prepared everything she needed to make jams, preserves, and pickles. But when she arrived at the cottage, she was stunned to discover that all the blackcurrants, redcurrants, and raspberries had vanished. The neighbours mentioned that some local boys might have snuck in during picking, but it didnt quite add up it wouldve taken them the whole day to clear out such a large crop.

Suddenly, Emilys aunt, who lives nearby, came rushing over. She revealed that my mother-in-law had stopped by only a day beforehand and had left with two massive buckets full of berries. Emily was both livid and at a loss for words.

She confronted her mother-in-law, who admitted without any remorse that shed gathered up all the fruit. Her reasoning was that she wanted to make sure her grandchildren had enough vitamins, and that she simply couldnt afford market prices for berries these days. Emily was beside herself with disbelief and voiced her frustration at the whole affair, now faced with the task of buying fruit at full price just so she could prepare for the winter.

Upon returning home, Emily told me all that had happened. I was just as taken aback by my mothers actions. Determined to ensure such a situation didnt repeat itself, Emily and I agreed that wed keep the keys to the cottage ourselves. From then on, my mother-in-law only visited the cottage when we all went together, making sure nothing went on without Emilys knowledge again.

Reflecting on it now, Ive learnt the importance of establishing boundaries, even within the family, and ensuring open communication to prevent such misunderstandings from arising in the future.
