We live in a small town. Once, we worked hard to earn money for our own two-room apartment. But the work in our town was quite difficult, and then friends offered to go abroad and earn money. We accepted this offer without hesitation. Our son is already an adult and he will also need a separate place to live. Why not take advantage of this opportunity? We decided to go with the whole family. We decided not to give up the apartment, although there was a rather expensive repair.
And then, unexpectedly, my husband’s younger sister told us that she got divorced and had nowhere to live. My husband loves his sister very much and tries to support her in every possible way, so he offered her his option: to live in our apartment, keep it clean and pay only for utilities. After all, how can you take money from a family member?
We went abroad, of course, it was quite difficult to get used to the new place. My son even made friends with local boys. My husband and I got a job, the salary was not bad. From time to time we called my sister, asked if everything was okay.
We tried to save as much as we could, saving penny by penny. For all the time we lived here, my husband and I managed to raise money for a one-room apartment for our son. My sister knew that we would return that week, but on the way we felt that something was wrong: she spoke strange phrases and periodically turned off the phone.
We arrived home and were immediately surprised that our beautiful carpet was not outside the apartment. We opened the apartment and were stunned. The furniture was in a mess, some shelves were broken, the wallpaper was taken out, the bathroom tiles were cracked, the mirror was broken. It was obvious that someone tried to take everything away in a hurry, but did not have time. Some of the dishes were taken out of the kitchen, bed linen also disappeared somewhere.
We immediately called my sister, but she did not answer the phone. There were many bills in the mailbox that no one was even going to pay. I decided to go to the store to buy all the necessary cleaning products for the apartment, and then my neighbor in the stairwell stopped me and said: “It’s good that you’re back, it was horrible here”. She immediately asked who lives here.
As it turned out, my sister reconciled with her ex-husband and moved to live with him, and decided to rent our apartment to a family with three children and a big dog. And then, when the family moved out, they sent some young girl who was always asking to visit on weekends. The neighbors often called the police because of the noise.
The next day, my husband’s sister came to us and said: “Sorry, I didn’t have time to finish cleaning”. I was upset: “Stop lying to me. You were entrusted to take care of the apartment. What right did you have to rent it to strangers?”.
The sister began to cry and explained that she really needed the money, so she decided to do it. She could not give the money to compensate for all the damage she had caused, and she could not pay the state debt either. The husband stood up for his sister, said that she had family circumstances and nothing terrible happened, and we will make cosmetic repairs and return everything back.
I do not understand him at all. I will not give him a single penny of the money that we brought to make repairs in our apartment. This money is meant for our son. Where are we going to get money for repairs now? Let his sister give half of her salary every month. You may not believe me, but I am thinking of going to court.
What would you advise a woman in this situation?
