Twice a week, my dad would leave home for a few hours and return bursting with energy and in an exceptionally cheerful mood.

When I was ten, with a brother aged twelve who spent most of his time galloping around outside, our conversations were, let’s say, minimal. Instead, I helped Mum with the housework, while Dad, who worked at the local factory, would wander in rather late most nights. Wed usually gather around the dining table, and after dinner, Dad would polish his leather shoes to a mirror shine, spend a suspiciously long time in front of the hallway mirror, and leave the house without so much as a Cheerio. Mum always glanced after him as the door closed, leaving me to puzzle over her wistful stare and the mystery of Dads evening escapades.

One evening, curiositymy oldest companiongot the better of me, and I decided to tail him as he slipped out the front door. Dad headed off to the Town Hall, and, after hesitating, I mustered up the courage to follow him inside. There, I bumped into a striking lady who was instantly familiar as one of those famed opera singers from the local theatre. She invited me to tag along, and together we slipped into a packed auditorium.

Lo and beholdthere was my Dad, gracing the stage and belting out an opera number, absolutely unaware of my presence among the spectators. His musical prowess had been the best-kept secret in our familys history. He sang his heart out, and I was entirely swept away with joy, teary-eyed for perhaps the first time since losing my favourite hamster to next doors cat. The audience exploded in applause, and he was showered with bouquets galore. Afterwards, Dad and I spent a lovely hour strolling in the park, both of us in a splendid mood.

Upon returning home, I whispered to Mum that Dad certainly wasnt off with another woman, and she murmured quietly, I know. It was obvious shed long been aware of his clandestine talent and the true reason for his nightly outings.

From that evening on, I was bursting with pride for Dads extraordinary abilities. Our little secret became something precious, and I felt truly grateful for the happiness he brought into our lives, simply by sharing his remarkable gift.
