Twenty Years On, I Recognise My Younger Self in the Boy: On the Eve of Their Wedding, Arthur Suspected Martha of Betrayal—Decades Later, He Meets Her Son, Who Is His Mirror Image

Twenty years later, I recognise my younger self in the boy.

The night before the wedding, David was convinced Emily had cheated on him. No matter how many times she assured him that shed always been faithful, he simply refused to believe her. But then, two decades down the line, he met her son. The lad was the absolute spitting image of him

Their love was the kind you read about in old English novelspassionate, rare, and utterly overwhelming. People used to envy them, some even tried to stir up trouble between them. They were planning their wedding, the whole village was talking about itbut, in the end, it never happened.

Just one evening before they were to marry, Emily told David she was expecting. Instead of joy, her news was met with anger and suspicion. David accused her of being unfaithful, claiming there was no way she could be having his child so soon. He looked her in the eyes and told her he didnt believe her, full stop. Still, she went ahead and had the baby.

His mates all said he was being an idiot. Everyone could see Emily absolutely adored him, but Dave just wouldnt have it. Their relationship fell apart, the wedding was called off. He even suggested she sort it out, but she flat out refused. Emily waited, right up to the last moment, hoping hed call and apologise, but that rang never came.

She decided not to call either. David was convinced he was right. Soon enough, they headed their separate ways. Emily had to deal with everything on her own. Even when they bumped into each other now and then, David acted like he barely recognised her. Hed see her in the park with the little one, but hed always look away, trying to avoid the past catching up with him.

Emilys life wasnt easy. Raising a child alone is never a walk in the park, but she managed to find happiness with her son. Shed pretty much given up any thoughts of her own romantic future, but that didnt mattershe had her little blessing, and shed do anything for him.

She juggled a couple of jobs just to give him the best she could. Her son, Christopher, never caused her troublehe was her rock and her greatest defender.

Chris went on to get a degree, even did a stint in the army, and later landed himself a good job. As he grew older, he stopped asking about his dadhed worked out the truth himself. Sure, as a boy, Emily told him tales about his father, but did he ever really believe them? That much is obvious.

He was the absolute image of his father. When Chris turned twenty, Emily would look at him and be reminded of the young David shed once loved so dearly. Then, as fate would have it, their paths finally crossedEmily, David, and Chris. David saw straight awayhe couldnt ignore the likeness. He spent a good while just looking at them, unable to get the words out.

Three days later, he turned up on Emilys doorstep and asked, Can you forgive me?

A long time ago she whispered back.

And just like that, the stories about his dad finally came to lifeChris laid eyes on his father for the very first time.
