Our family had two daughters: myself and Grace. Yet, it was painfully clear that Grace was the apple of our parents eyes, and they made no effort to hide it. Their favoritism began when Grace was a child; she was always given the finest things, while I was left with whatever was leftover. Grace looked strikingly like our parents, with a beauty everyone admired. I, on the other hand, resembled my fathers brotherthe family jokewho was not what people would call handsome. Even my parents called me plain.
When we finished secondary school, my parents bought Grace a flat in London and immediately began refurbishing it. Meanwhile, I was packed off to live with my grandmother in her three-bedroom home.
During that time, my grandmother fell seriously ill. Every day after school, I dashed home to care for her. One evening, she quietly confessed that she planned to leave her flat to my parents in her will. I begged my parents for help, desperate for support with the weight of caring for an elderly woman. They claimed they were far too busy arranging Graces new home. Before she passed, my grandmother revealed shed saved a substantial sum of pounds just for me. She instructed me to keep this a secret and take the money quietly after she was gone. At the funeral, my parents launched an exhausting search for the cash, turning the flat upside-down, but their efforts were futile.
By then, Id already bought a two-bedroom flat with the money and started renovations. Still, I remained living in my grandmothers house. Two months later, my parents told me they intended to rent out the flat, insisting that Grace needed financial assistance, as her sister was struggling. Naturally, I asked for my own place. They snapped that I was an adult and should be making my own way in the world. So I did.
When my flat was finally ready, I moved in. I even found myself a boyfriend; things between us were starting to get serious. The moment my parents discovered Id bought my own property, they labelled me a thief. Tired of their relentless insults, I told them to leave and severed all ties.
