The notary asked if I had a country house or garage. Maybe that’s where I’ll have to live in my old age

Aunt Rebecca is a very decent woman, she is my mother’s sister. I have always felt sorry for her. My aunt lost her husband early on, and after that she never met her happiness.

Aunt Rebecca was very sorry that she did not have the money to organize a wedding for her only daughter, and the couple would have to borrow money. But she decided to make them a gift – to sign over her apartment to the children so that they could have their own place.

My mother and I told my aunt that this was a good idea, because the apartment would go to her daughter anyway. There was no need to rush, let her borrow money from us and help the couple organize a wedding.

However, she did not listen to us. The very next day, my aunt went to a notary. Later, she came to my mother and me to ask for money. We asked her what she had decided about the apartment. My aunt replied that she had changed her mind about signing it over to her children. And here’s why…

– I told the notary the whole situation, and he asked me: “Do you have a country house or a garage?” I answered that I did not. He said that I should think about it, because I might spend my old age there. Later, the notary told me a story about people as naive as me who end up with nothing.

We were glad that at least someone managed to convince my aunt and lent her money for the wedding. But now we have no reason to worry that she will spend her old age on the street.
