The retired lady told me she hasn’t seen her son in over six years.
How long has it been since your son last spoke to you? I asked my neighbour. As she replied, my heart broke in two.
Its been six years since I last saw him. After he moved away with his wife, he used to call me from time to time, but then he just stopped. Once, I bought a cake for his birthday and took it round to see him… At this point, she lowered her gaze and tears filled her eyes.
And what happened then? I gently asked.
My daughter-in-law opened the door and told me I wasnt welcome in their house. My son didnt say a word to her, he just looked at me as if I was to blame for something, and then looked away. Thats the last time I ever saw him.
He never rang you again after that? I could hardly believe what I was hearing.
I called him once, when I decided to sell my three-bedroomed flat and buy a smaller place. Naturally, I gave him some money. He came, signed the paperwork, took the money, and I never heard from him again.
Do you feel very lonely, or have you got used to being on your own? I asked quietly.
Oh, Im all right, love. When I was still very young, I was left alone with my son because my husband left me for another woman. I raised my boy by myself. He grew up surrounded by love and care. Later on, he told me he wanted to move out and rent his own flat. At first, I was glad I thought it meant he was growing up and wanted some independence.
But really, it was all about his girlfriend. She was the one who insisted they should have their own place so no one would get in the way of their fun. Then she became pregnant.
Youre telling me all this so calmly, I said, surprised. Arent you upset that your son left you at your age?
Ive grown used to it, honestly. I quite like living in my new place. Ive got enough money for everything I need. Every morning, I get up, put the kettle on, and take my cuppa out on the balcony. I love watching the city wake up. When I was young, all I dreamed of was getting a decent lie-in, because I used to work double shifts. I dreamed of growing old, surrounded by people I love, but I suppose I was meant for loneliness.
Why not get a pet? Its always nicer with company, I suggested.
You see, dear, even cats have been known to leave their owners sometimes, and I couldnt take in a dog. I never know if Ill wake up the next morning, and I simply cant take responsibility for something I might not be able to care for. Ive made enough mistakes in the past thats quite enough.
She tried to keep her composure, but soon she couldnt hold back her tears.
Children, never abandon your parents! You are a part of themwhen they go, a piece of you goes with them.
