The Kids Came to Visit and Called Me a Poor Housekeeper: How My Family Reacted to My Birthday Preparations and What Happened Next

The children came to visit and called me a poor housekeeper.

The day before my birthday, I started preparing food for the celebration. I asked my husband to peel the vegetables and chop the salads while I browned the meat and cooked the other dishes myself. I thought Id put together a wonderful, hearty spread, something to make my big family happy. On the morning of my birthday, my husband and I went to the local bakery to buy a large, fresh cakea treat I knew my grandchildren would love.

The first to arrive were my son, his wife, and their little boy, followed by my eldest daughter with her two children, and then my middle daughter with her husband and their kids. We all gathered around the table, cutlery clattering and conversation bubbling. Everyone seemed to enjoy the meal; there was plenty for all. The grandchildren were so full they ended up putting sticky handprints all over the wallpaper, and the grown-ups managed to stain the tablecloth. But over tea, my eldest daughter said:

You havent put much on the table, Mum. Weve eaten, and what now?

Her comment struck a nerve. Although she meant it as a joke and the others laughed, I felt hurt. I do try to pack up some treats for the children when they visit, but its not easy cooking up reserves for such a large family. I only have modest-sized pans and a single cooker, and I simply cant spend my entire pension on one celebration.

Dont worry, love, my husband whispered to me in the kitchen as we fetched the cake. Everything was so nice, thats why they didnt have enough. If theyve got the time, just share your recipes and let them try their hand at it. Besides, next time, maybe they should bring a dish along. There are so many of them and just the two of us.

And so, Ive learned that you neednt bear the whole world on your shoulders. Its alright to accept help, and sometimes, happiness grows when everyone contributes a littlebecause a family, after all, is at its best when everyone brings something to the table.
