On Saturday, early in the morning, Philip and William arrived in the village to the house that Philip had inherited from his parents. The boy quietly crossed the threshold of his home. The bed was neatly made, lace covers on elegant embroidered pillows… It seemed that his mother had just left and would be back any minute. Only the dust betrayed the woman’s six-month absence. There was a shoebox on the table. Philip opened the box and gasped. As often happens, children live with their parents, then grow older and forget about their existence. In the case of Philip and William, the opposite is true. When Philip was 12, his father left the family, or rather, he simply disappeared and did not even pay child support. The boys’ mother had to work two jobs to provide for the boys’ well-being, without denying them anything.
The woman worked hard, and seeing this, Philip wanted to find a job as soon as possible to help his mother financially. Only once, their mother said that she wanted to move to the village for a few days to live with her mother, and, accordingly, with the boys’ grandmother. However, it was not their mother who returned from the village, but only their grandmother. They never saw their mother again. For many years, she did not even write to them, and the grandmother, when the boys asked her about their mother, replied that she had no time to talk to them about such topics. Although they had not seen each other for many years, the boys still loved her very much, and it was difficult for them to bear it. Their mother’s neighbor gave them the keys to her house in the village, but the boys needed time to mentally prepare for this, they did not immediately enter the house…
So these keys stayed on the nightstand for a year, until Philip remembered them, gathered all his will and decided to do it. Philip called his brother, and the boys went to the village together. The bed was beautifully made, everything was neatly tidy, clean, and if it weren’t for the dust, it would seem that their mother would be coming home soon. Soon the boys noticed a shoebox next to the bed. Philip
opened the box and was shocked by what he saw. There was a letter saying that the money for the funeral was at the bottom of the box, and there were many other letters in which their mother wrote that she wanted to see the boys very much, but her health was against her wishes. At that moment, both boys started to cry. They were incredibly scared because all these years, they thought that their mother had abandoned them, like their father, and she was just fighting the disease and did not want the boys to see her like that.
