I want to tell you an interesting story about how my husband’s mother tried to drive us out of our apartment. It all started out quite ordinary and simple. My husband has a sister, Dominique. She has two children. Dominika and her husband’s children are very talented. They won a children’s song contest in their town and so they were invited to participate in a contest in the capital.
My mother-in-law called us and told us about it.
– You’re going to let Dominika and the kids stay with you, aren’t you? They won’t be able to rent an apartment! They have no money for that. Children are very careful and obedient! In three days nothing will happen to your apartment!
I knew it was true. Dominika raised her children very well. So my husband and I agreed. But it turned out that my husband’s grandmother also came with Dominika, her children, and her husband. She had to undergo an urgent examination at the hospital.
– Why don’t you come stay with me for a while? – my mother-in-law suggested. – You’ll be crowded all together!
My husband and I lived in a nice three-room apartment. My mother-in-law lived in a two-room apartment next door. I trusted Dominika, so we agreed to it. We took our things and started living at my mother-in-law’s place. We went to our apartment every day: we took clothes and various small things. The apartment was in perfect order: everything was clean. Dominika’s children took part in the contest, but they were asked to stay for the gala concert which was to take place in a week. At the end of the week money arrived on my card. This money was sent to me by Dominique.
– We use water and electricity and gas, too! – Dominica said. – That’s why I sent you the money.
I liked that Dominika was so honest and responsible. The children performed at the gala concert. Everything went great. And then Grandma was put in the hospital for a checkup. So Dominika’s family was delayed for another week. And then a week later my mother-in-law told me and my husband some very interesting news.
– Dominika and her children and husband are still staying for the time being! Dominika was advised to take the kids to different auditions. This is their chance to break through. After all, they are so talented! Let them try. But they’d have to be registered in the capital. Why don’t you register them here? And when they become famous, they’ll thank you!
– Mom, why don’t you register them? – My husband asked.
– Well they live in your house! It is impossible that they live in one place and are registered in another. What if there’s an inspection?
– Well, let’s do it this way. They lived in our apartment, now let them live in your apartment. We’ll take you to our place so Dominika and her family won’t be too crowded! – I suggested.
My mother in law did not like it. She said nothing. Two days later Dominika and her family went home. And my mother-in-law often reminds me that my husband and I ruined her grandchildren’s stellar future. But I think that parents should be in charge of their children’s future. But you should never overstay your welcome. You have to have a conscience, too.
