Something Strange Has Happened to My Stepfather: He’s Decided to Leave His Entire Estate to the Son He Hasn’t Spoken to in 30 Years…

I was just ten years old when my father walked out on my mother.

She bore it with such grace that even as a child, I was struck by her strength and quietly resolved to be like her. My mother never spoke a word against my father, though he had been unfaithful to her and, on some occasions, even raised his hand. She referred to him only as “your dad” and would only mention his good qualities. In time, fate seemed to reward her kindness, bringing into our lives my stepfather, Richard.

It was his second marriage as well. His past had been troubled; his first wife would constantly berate him for not making enough money and called him a failure. Tired of the endless reproach, he decided one day to leave her. The only reason he kept in touch was their son.

After Richard’s divorce, his fortunes changed dramatically. Primarily, he met my mother, who truly loved him and stood by him in everything. Not long after, he was promoted at work and his salary multiplied several times over. Within two years, he was able to buy a lovely house and began saving for a car. When his ex-wife caught wind of his new circumstances, she tried to reconcile, but it was too late. After Richard refused her, she forbade their son from seeing his father.

To us, Richard became more of a father than we could have hoped for, filling our home with care and warmthmore than our own father had ever given. He spent time with us, took genuine interest in our lives, and encouraged our hobbies. Our little family was finally happy, and nothing compared to the joy of seeing our mothers smiling face again.

Many years have passed since then. My sister Charlotte and I have grown up and started families of our own. Mum and Dadby which I mean Richard, as he truly earned that nameboth retired and were enjoying a well-earned rest. I had every reason to believe life would simply continue to be kind to them. But then, one day, Mum called me with an urgency that chilled me. She asked me to come at once.

I could tell at once that something was wrong with Richard, for my mother was never one to panic without cause.

Tragically, it seemed Richard had chosen to leave all his property to his son, whom he hadnt seen for three decades. Neither Charlotte nor I had ever thought to claim any part of Richard’s estate, but we had hoped at the very least he would leave the house to our mother. She had given so much to make it a home and now, heaven forbid anything happened to Richard, shed be left with nothing.

Mum wept over this, and I did my best to comfort her. Yet I cannot fathom why Richard would do this to her even now, all these years later, I still wonder.
