I married David eighteen years ago. His story is quite a sad one, all because of his ex-wife, who abandoned him and their children to run off with her lover. David and Anna married for love, and Anna gave birth to two lovely children: a boy named Thomas and a girl named Emily. When Thomas was four and Emily three, David lost his job. It was a difficult period for the family. Anna did her best to find work, scraping together enough to feed the children. David, meanwhile, took to spending his days drinking with his mates in the shed, doing nothing apart from moaning about the government and feeling sorry for himself.

Anna became thoroughly worn out; and just then, a wealthy man began courting her. Thomas and Emily were left on their own, fed and cared for by kindly neighbours who did their best to look after them. Thomas took the news calmly, telling her that as far as he was concerned, I was his only mum. Emily was warmer, forgiving Anna almost at once.
