Sarah Had Always Overlooked Her Brother-in-Law, but One Remark Changed Their Relationship Forever

During our university days, Emily and I were inseparable friends. Time, however, led us to build our lives in different placesmy husband and I moved away, while Emily remained in London. Thankfully, the rise of the internet reconnects us, and we’ve picked up our correspondence where we left off. In our recent chats, Emily shares a story about her son-in-law.

Emilys daughter is called Sophie. Her husband left right after Sophie was born, so Emily has raised her daughter single-handedly, making sure Sophie had everything she needed and hoping her life would be better than Emilys own childhood. When Sophie finished her studies at university in Manchester and started a job at a local hospital, she met a man named Ben. Ben didnt make much of an impression at firsthe hadnt attended university and came across as an ordinary bloke. Emily disapproved quietly, thinking he was not the sort of man her clever, educated daughter should be settling down with.

She reckoned Sophie would eventually come to her senses and move on. Yet a month later, the young couple decided to marry in a small, unpretentious ceremony, which left Emily quite shaken. Still thinking it was little more than a phase, Emily hoped Sophie would soon tire of Ben and end the marriage. She even made an excuse of being unwell to avoid attending the wedding and never showed much curiosity about Bens family or background.

As time goes on, Sophie and Ben call round to see Emily fairly often. Emily sets out simple meals when they visitleftover food, overcooked chops, stale bread, or unappealing casseroles. Sophie barely eats, but Ben always arrives hungry and finishes every morsel, grateful for whats put in front of him. While his thanks touch Emily, she continues to harbour doubts.

One evening, while Sophie sits glued to the television and Ben tucks into his dinner, he compliments Emilys casserole. Amused by his enthusiasm, Emily remarks that it’s just a bog-standard dish, the sort youd find at any nursery. Ben quietly replies that, at his nursery, decent meals were scarce, and what was served was barely edible. His admission unexpectedly brings tears to Emilys eyes. In a moment, she feels a wave of guilt and shame for having disliked him so unreasonably.

From then on, Emilys attitude shiftsshe starts putting real effort into cooking proper meals for Ben, her heart now warmed by the kindness she sees in him. That one brief conversation transforms Emilys feelings for her son-in-law and plants the seeds of a bond that grows stronger, in spite of her original misgivings.
