I have been married for more than twenty years. For all these years, there have been no thoughts of divorce, we live in peace and understanding. We both work and have household responsibilities. We have a daughter who recently turned 18 and is now at university.
We have never been rich, but we have never had any needs. We always had normal clothes, could go on vacation to the sea every year, and always had food in the fridge. In addition to the apartment in the city where we lived most of the time, we have a country house where we plant our own vegetable garden and grow a small orchard.
The village where our house is located is quite small, and people keep vacation homes there rather than live there permanently. The house next door has changed owners. The first person I met was a woman, and I could tell right away that she had a lot of money. She even drove an expensive tall foreign car to the village, and immediately started renovating the house and building another floor, even though she said that they only needed the house for barbecues.
Her daughter was the next to meet her. And my daughter took an immediate liking to her, so she decided to teach her about life, as if she should run away from us because my husband and I have a poor “aura”!
When her daughter asked for an explanation, she said: “If you don’t run away from your parents, you will always be poor, just like them!” The most frustrating thing about this is that my daughter agreed that my husband and I are poor and that she has nothing to learn from us. We have always tried to make her no worse than anyone else, and then such words are like a knife in the heart…
Of course, my husband and I don’t have expensive cars or several apartments, but we earn good money and can provide for ourselves and her normal life. So my husband couldn’t stand it and quarreled with the neighbor about her turning her daughter against us, and she made such a scandal that, perhaps, only the deaf did not hear that my husband and I are miserable beggars…
What do you think of her words? Perhaps there is some truth in them, if her daughter agreed?
