The other day, I went to visit my daughter-in-law, and I was rather taken aback to find a woman there, cleaning and tidying up.
Ive always told my son that we truly didnt care about the financial status of his future bride. He took this to heart, fell for Jennifera lovely girl, but never one for saving money and, to be honest, always a bit pampered by life.
After the wedding, the children moved into the house we bought for them. My husband and I had fixed it up, making sure theyd be comfortable, and we still try to help as much as possible, often turning up with groceries. Jennifers fine. She recently had my grandchild, so shes not working at the moment. My son, on the other hand, doesnt have the flashiest job, nor does he bring in much money.
You can imagine my shock when I entered the house my children and grandchild call home, only to discover a stranger dusting the shelves. As it turns out, my daughter-in-law had hired a housekeeper! She doesnt seem to lift a finger herself. How can she justify such extravagance? Has she even a scrap of conscience left?
I told that woman to leavethe house is still mine, no matter how you slice it! And, after all, shes being paid with my money. Where on earth would my son and his wife find the cash for this sort of service? I decided to wait for Jennifer to return, as she was out with my grandson at the time. As soon as they came in, I didnt mince my words. She stood there and said:
Mum, since being on maternity leave, Ive actually found work as a blogger, so I have a decent income now. Honestly, I really need the housekeeper, otherwise Id never keep up with everything I have to do!
I stared at her. A blogger? Is that a proper job now? Are people truly paid for that? And anyhow, I dont want strangers in my house, tidying up.
If moneys that plentiful, you can pay me to clean up, and we wont need these strangers coming in here, I said.
She just mumbled something under her breath and went off to tend to the baby. I waited for my son to come home so I could tell him all about it. And what did he say?
Mum, I knew about the cleaner. Jen works really hard, and I want to spend time with my son after work. Theres nothing wrong with a bit of help.
Honestly, I dont understand young people these days. How can they afford it? I went straight to my husband, and do you know what he came out with?
You dont need to meddle in their affairs! Theyre adults nowthey can sort their own lives out!
I havent been this riled up in ages. Im convinced Im doing and saying the right thing! What do you all think?
