So, this summer, my wifes beloved younger sister came over to stay with us. I always called her the golden child because at every family gatheringMum, Dad, everyonewould only talk about her. She was the star pupil at school, got a degree, landed a job in her chosen fieldhonestly, youd think she was the perfect daughter, wouldnt you?
Meanwhile, her older sistermy wifenever even finished uni and got married instead. But you know what? No one really minded, probably because I was reasonably well-off, running my own business. I had a decent flat, a car, a good income. Sadly, despite all that, the best daughter was still my wifes little sister.
Anyway, this summer, the little sisterlets call her Emilycame to visit and asked me for a loan. She wanted to put down a deposit on a flat and didnt have enough for it. To me, it wasnt that much money, so I didnt mind lending it to her. She told me she worked for the council and would pay me back on time, no worries.
So, I gave her the money and she all but promised me shed pay it back every month without fail. But get thisjust a week later, she jetted off to the seaside. Honestly, I was baffledhow does someone who claims they’re skint and desperate for a mortgage suddenly find cash for a holiday?
She told everyone shed been saving up all year for this getaway, but heres the twist: she hadnt even applied for the mortgage yet. So, I confronted her about it, and she casually said shed changed her mind.
I asked for the money back, and she just shrugged and said she didnt have it anymore, as shed spent it all at the seaside. Thats when I realised she had never planned to buy a flat at all.
I politely asked if she could repay me as soon as possible, since the money was meant for her deposit, not for a holiday. Her reply really got under my skin”Dont worry, Ill earn loads soon; just be patient, Im skint at the moment.”
So, how do you think this all ended? Well, exactly as youd guessshe ran off to her mum and moaned that I was demanding the money back too soon, saying Family shouldnt treat each other like that! And, just like that, the youngest daughter turned back into the family darling, while we were painted as the wealthy monsters. Typical, right?
