The problem of dog overpopulation and abandoned dogs has a solution, lots of love.
Dogs do not imagine that when they get off the plane, they would be hugged and loved by their new parents.
The number of animals in street situations grows considerably year after year. While this can be a problem for many communities, the measures that are applied are unfair to the animals and do not solve the problem of the irresponsibility of their caretakers.
A study determined that most cases of stray animals began with an owner who did not know or did not want to take care of them. That is why MexiPerro A.C., a Mexican association founded in the state of Puebla, has been working to give each of these animals a second chance.
Leticia Ramirez, one of the founders of MexiPerro A.C. said that in Mexico City alone there are 1.5 million dogs living on the streets, victims of mistreatment and ignored by their caretakers. It is estimated that in Puebla alone about 100 dogs are killed every day, 16 thousand per year.
Many governments take the sacrifice as a measure to face the excessive growth of stray animals. However, this measure exempts their irresponsible caretakers and violates the rights of these noble creatures. That is why this foundation, with the support of other organizations, has managed to rescue hundreds of puppies to relocate them in families that will give them all the love and care they deserve.
One of these measures has been to carry out the so-called flight parents, that is to say, travelers documented as part of the luggage, in this case the pets. They complete all the customs formalities and put them on the plane where they will wait to meet their new adoptive families.
The founder was proud to share a success story in which 21 puppies made it all the way to Canada to be adopted. After a five hour flight in their cages, the dogs arrived at the Canadian airport where they were welcomed by sister associations of MexiPerro A.C., such as Dogs in Better Spots (DIBS), Safe our Scruff, Canine Heaven, SPCA, K9 CRUSADERS and Fetch & Releash.
The founder bid them farewell in tears after caring for them for 7 months before her trip, “even though I know they will be better, I will never see them again,” she sobbed.
It is incredible what can be achieved with the agreement between nations to work for the rights of these animals and give them the opportunity to be with a family that will know how to value and care for them. Let us always remember that adopting is the best way to show our love for these creatures that will surely give us their hearts without any condition whatsoever.
