I came out of the gym and noticed I had seven missed calls from Mum says Alice. Then I saw her text: Call me back!. Even though it was nearly eleven at night, I decided to ring her. Mum is a bit of a worrier and could stay awake all night fretting over some nonsense. When I called, she asked me to come over and told me, her eyes brimming with tears, that something had happened which might mean the wedding could be off.
Alice has a younger sister, Sophie, just twenty-three years old. Sophie is an ambitious and successful designer. She graduated last year and landed her first job almost immediately. She studied design while working part-time, and once she finished university, the company where shed interned hired her straight away. Her life had always seemed flawless, the kind you could point to as an exampleyou could, at least, until that day.
Sophie had been dating David for just over a year. He was three years older than her, lived on his own, worked hard, and was saving up to buy a house. He gave every impression of being well-mannered and respectful.
With their wedding planned at the local registry office, there were only a few weeks left until the big day.
Someone messaged Sophie on social media! writes Alice. We dont know each other, but I know you and theres something important you should know before the wedding. Sophie checked the womans profilemiddle-aged, nothing remarkable there, she thought.
Yet, the stranger wouldnt let it go and started sending messages from different accounts. Eventually, they agreed to meet at a café near Sophies workplace. Sophie was sitting at the table waiting, when, unexpectedly, a pregnant woman walked in. At first Sophie thought it couldnt be her, but she was shocked when the woman came straight towards her.
Are you Sophie? My names Emma. Ive been seeing David for over a year and were expecting a baby boy in four months.
Naturally, Sophie couldnt believe her story. It sounded ridiculous, didnt it? Impossible. Sophie and David had been together for over a year and their wedding was just around the corner! The woman didnt want an argument or to prove anything. She simply left, saying as she walked out: You have my number, call if youve got questions. And she added you can speak to your fiancé too.
So what did David say? And thats where the trouble really began. Sophie had decided from the start that she and David wouldnt be intimate until they were married. They went on walks, kissed, hugged, but nothing more. Sophie hadnt had any previous experience.
David, on the other hand, was an experienced young man. He grew restless and decided to have a casual relationship on the side to fulfil his needs. He met Emma somewhere, and made it clear that there could be nothing serious between them and he wasnt planning a future together. Emma, early in their acquaintance, was fine with this arrangement. Shed recently split from her husband, already had a child, received decent child support, and worked. It suited her, given their age gap.
David said that when the baby was born, he would take a DNA test and, if he were the father, hed help out. He then told Sophie it was her fault, because he was a young, healthy man and her strict old-fashioned principles had led to this.
Now David begs Sophie not to break off their engagement, insisting he loves her and only needed Emma for physical contact, claiming that if Sophie had been smarter, Emma would never have come into his life.
David maintained that if the child were his, hed offer support, but wouldnt be involved further. Emma chose to keep the baby and declined his offer for money to terminate the pregnancy. Now, he says, thats her issue.
What do you thinkshould David be blamed for this situation? Is his so-called masculinity a justification, since its tough for a young man without intimacy? Or should Sophie walk away from a fiancé who betrays her trust, realising that lack of intimacy is never an excuse for infidelity?
In the end, trust is the foundation of all relationships; if its cracked, love alone cannot repair it. Its better to be honest with yourself and otherseven if it means walking awaybecause sometimes, safeguarding your own dignity teaches you what true love ought to be.
