In a small dip in the snow beside the dual carriageway, someone has abandoned newborn puppies. Their chances of survival dwindle by the hour.
The puppies are huddled as tightly as possible, desperately clinging to each other for warmth. Early this morning, word spreads swiftly online: right by the road, discarded pups have been found in the freezing snow.
The tiny creatures are bunched in a heap, trying to keep the cold at bay and stay alive a little longer. Although the calendar suggests spring should be underway, winter is far from over. In town, the thermometer reads 7°C, but out here on the open road, the temperature sinks to 10°C or even lower. How much longer could they last in that shallow dip in the snow?
The hollow is about eight inches deep. The snow directly beneath the puppies has started to melt, a sign theyve been lying there quite some time, their small bodies doing what they can to fend off the chill. But fate has other ideas. A garage owner named George, at whose MOT shop the pups are found, cannot simply walk past. He brings the lot of them inside. Though at a loss for what to do next, the main thing is: he hasnt left them to perish in the cold. Huge gratitude to George for his compassion.
The puppies are desperately young.
There are five little souls altogether. Three boys and two girls, or perhaps four boys and one girlits still hard to tell for certain. George rings around local animal charities, but none are able to take them. The rescue shelters are out of the questionthe pups are barely two or three weeks old, far too fragile. It isnt possible to vaccinate them yet: pups this young cant have jabs until two months old.
To send such tiny creatures to a kennel now is nearly a death sentence. Theyd be almost certain to fall ill and, sadly, might not make it. We know this all too well from past heartbreaks. Even trusted foster homes with medical oversight cant take them in right nowMaudie and Jake, two puppies just recovering from parvovirus, are still quarantined there.
For tonight, the puppies shelter in the warmth of Georges garage. Reviewing the CCTV footage, George explains that a womanthough its difficult to call her thatdumped them out into the snow at night. She simply walked away, leaving these helpless babies to freeze.
One can only imagine the fear and confusion of these pups, wrenched away from their mother and left to face the cold, utterly alone. To that person, only God can judge.
We are determined to do all we can so these innocent little ones find a real home and loving owners. They deserve the gift of life and warmthnot merely in temperature, but the warmth that only kindness and care can bring.
