Emily, its been five years since you left; you havent cared how Im living or whats happened to me.
Emily and George had lived together for over five years in Manchester. George never earned much; he was an ordinary labourer, and his wages were rather modest. Emily, however, had always dreamed of a comfortable, affluent life, so she found herself drawn to men with deeper pockets than her husbands.
One day, Emilys luck seemed to bloomshe caught the eye of a wealthy businessman who promised her a life of luxury. She was swept away by his grand promises and left her struggling husband, eager to start anew.
George was devastated by her betrayal. He pleaded at her feet, swearing that he would do anything for her not to leave. He promised her that hed change, that hed find a better job, that he would work from dawn till dusk so that she could have whatever she wished for.
But Emilys resolve didnt waver. She was already imagining herself sailing on a white yacht, shopping in exclusive boutiques across London and Paris. She knew George could never provide such a life, so no tearful vows nor declarations of everlasting love could stop her from leaving.
Five years later, when Emily was thirty-two, her wealthy suitor lost interest. Surrounded by younger, livelier women, he told her she was too demanding and argumentative, and he wanted nothing more to do with her.
With nowhere to go and unused to working for herself, Emily decided to return to her former husband. After all, she told herself, hadnt he pledged hed love her forever? Surely hed still be waiting.
As Emily approached the flat where shed once lived, she heard voices inside. The door swung open to reveal a woman she didnt recognise, holding a little girl in her arms.
Sweetheart, how many times must I tell you not to open the door by yourself? said the woman to the child. Then she turned to Emily. Can I help you?
Emily stood on the doorstep, lost for words. Im looking for George. Is he in?
George, someones here for you! the woman called over her shoulder, then looked back at Emily. Whats your name?
Emily, she managed, her voice trembling.
George appeared, surprise flashing across his face. Emily! he exclaimed. Then, turning to the other woman, he said, Love, please take Mary inside. I need a word.
Emily watched them go, stunned. Who who was that? And the child?
Thats my wife, Alice, and our daughter, Mary, said George.
Emily swallowed hard. You got married? You have a daughter? You promised youd love me forever, swore no one would ever mean as much to you!
George sighed. Its been years since you left, Emily. At first, I was broken. But I learned that life doesnt end because someone walks away. After some time, I met Alice. She made me feel happy again. She gave me a daughter.
What about me?
Emily, youve been gone for five years without so much as a word. You chased after another mans money, chasing a lavish life instead of what we had. We were never rich, but that never gave you the right to treat me the way you did. After all this time, you show upwhat do you expect, that Id be sitting here waiting for you forever?
I was a fool! I love you still!
Enough of this, Emily. Please leave. I dont need you and I dont want to see you. Is it because your wealthy friend left you that youve run back here? I cant go through this again. Please, just go.
With tears streaming down her cheeks, Emily turned and walked away, realising too late that no one wanted her. George, meanwhile, felt relief, knowing he had finally moved on and built a real life for himself.
Life has a way of showing us that chasing wealth and status over genuine love and loyalty can leave us with nothing at all. True happiness isnt found in riches, but in those who cherish us even in the toughest of times.
