Natalie, its been five years since you left. You never cared about how I was living, or what became of me.
Natalie and Jack had lived together for more than five years. Jack was never rich, just an ordinary labourer, and his wages were modest at best. Natalie always dreamt of a life filled with comfort, if not outright luxury, so she would light up whenever she met men of better means than her husband.
One day, Natalies luck seemed to changeshe caught the eye of a wealthy businessman, who promised her the world. Tempted by his grand words and dazzling offers, she abandoned her bewildered husband to chase a new beginning.
Jack was left undone by her actions. He pleaded on his knees, grovelling before the woman he loved, begging her with a desperate voice not to leave. He vowed he would change everything, that he would find a better job and work day and night to provide the life she wanted, if only shed stay.
But Natalie had already given her heart to the vision of gliding over the Thames on a gleaming yacht and buying fine clothes from Londons most expensive boutiques. Jack could never give her that, and neither his professions of undying love nor his desperate promises moved her.
Five years rolled by, and as Natalie turned thirty-two, her wealthy suitor lost interestyoung, captivating women buzzed around him wherever he went. He called Natalie demanding, said she argued too much, and coldly dismissed her.
With nowhere to go in London, never having worked a single day on her own, Natalie returned to the only person who had truly loved herher ex-husband. She convinced herself that his vow of eternal love meant hed be waiting for her.
As she approached the familiar old flat, a noise sounded from behind the door, which soon swung open to reveal an unfamiliar woman, holding a little girl in her arms.
Darling, weve talked about thisyou mustnt open the door alone, the woman chided gently, then turned to Natalie. Who are you looking for? she asked, a polite smile on her lips.
Natalie froze on the doorstep, her mouth hanging open. Im looking for Jackis he home? she managed, her voice trembling.
The woman called out, Jack, theres a woman here for you! Sorry, whats your name? She turned briefly back to Natalie, confused.
A moment later, Jack appeared, surprise etched on his face. Natalie! he exclaimed, then glanced at his wife. Love, could you take Mary inside? I need a word with someone.
As his wife departed with their daughter nestled in her arms, Natalie stared after them in disbelief. Who was that? she asked, her voice thick.
Thats my wife, Alice, and the little one is Marymy daughter, Jack replied quietly.
Breathless, Natalie stammered, You have a wife now? And a daughter? You promised me youd always love me; you said no one could ever take my place!
Jacks eyes softened for the briefest moment. Its been years, Natalie. At first, I was heartbrokenI thought Id never get over you. But then I realised life didnt end the day you left. I met Alice, and I fell completely in love. She gave me happiness, and a family.
She reached for his arm, her eyes filling with tears. And what about me?
He shook her hand off, his jaw clenched. You left and never looked back, not a single letter, not even a phone call. You ran after money and an easy life, and that meant more to you than I ever did. Maybe we were never well-off, but thats no excuse for what you did. Now youre here, after all this timedid you truly think Id just be waiting for you?
Natalie choked back a sob. I was a fool! I love you, Jack!
He turned away, unable to even look at her. Dont do this, Natalie. Just go. I dont need you anymore, and I dont want to see you. Is it because that rich fellow tossed you aside that youve come crawling back? I feel sick. Please just go.
Natalies sobs echoed down the corridor as she fled, devastated by the realisation that no one wanted her anymore. Meanwhile, Jack closed the door firmly behind her, grateful hed finally left her behindand managed, at long last, to find his own happiness.
