My second husband turned out to be a truly wonderful man, never hesitating to spend money on things for me and my son.
There was a time when everyone thought you should marry once and stay together until the end of your days. Now, people have come to realise that theres little sense in clinging to a man who shows no real care or attention. Why keep fighting for a marriage that obviously brings no happiness? Sadly, its not always possible to part on good terms or protect your children from the heartache that can follow.
My first husband left me for another woman, leaving me with a one-year-old son. He simply told me he was no longer interested in our marriage. Wed been husband and wife for six years. Life together was comfortablesometimes arguments, but nothing out of the ordinary. However, after our son was born, he began to change. The slightest thing would make him irritable, and hed disappear out in the evenings. I suspected there was another woman, though I tried not to believe it. Then one day, he packed up and left. Just like that, I was completely on my own.
Its been half a year since I met my second husband, Philip. Hes such a kind and considerate man. From the start, he noticed how hard it was for me to keep everything afloat and raise a child by myself. After our second date, when he walked me home, he gently suggested we pop into the shop for some groceries. He ended up buying all sorts of things for my son.
I felt awkward, if Im honest, but at the same time gratefulhe was genuinely eager to help. Later, I asked Philip if he might pick up some meat for us; I couldnt afford it too often. Every penny I earned went on my mortgage and the bare basics. Years ago, Id never imagined that taking out a mortgage would end up with me struggling alone, paying it off without support. It hadnt exactly turned out as Id planned.
One evening, Philip told me I should buy whatever I fancied at the shop. I actually burst into tearsit was the first time anyone had truly helped me! Even then, I only picked out essentials, steering clear of sweets and fruit. But Philip added some chocolate and a few oranges to the basket anyway. When we arrived home, he carried in two great big shopping bags.
After seeing each other for several months, it became clear to me that Philip was genuinely thoughtful and caring. He proved that he truly cares for the woman he loves and would never hold back for my sake. Before long, Id fallen for him completely, and we married. Philip became a devoted husband and a wonderful father figure.
Now, I realise that endless promises and empty gestures cost nothing. The true heart of a family lies in genuine care and attention. When someone really looks after you, you begin to feel safe, and you respond with love. Im so happy with Philip; I know, deep down, that Ive found someone trustworthy with whom I can live out my days in peace. And that, to me, is real happiness!
