My parents never gave me the support I needed, but my friends stood by me through every challenge. Even though it’s said that family is forever, that wasn’t true in my case—my friends were always there, encouraging me and helping me when I needed it most.

My parents have never given me the support I needed, but my friends have always stood by me through every difficulty. Although everyone says that family is forever, that hasnt been the case for me. My friends have always been there, encouraging me and helping when Ive needed it the most.

Our friendship began at school, where a group of boys and girls grew close over the years. I remember when I mentioned wanting to take part in an art coursemy parents refused to pay for the lessons. Yet, my friends stepped up straight away. They generously provided me with drawing supplies, and one of them, James, even persuaded his creative sister, a designer, to teach me free of charge. When graduation approached, my parents showed little interest, unwilling to spend any money on the occasion. My friends, on the other hand, went out and found part-time jobs to help fund the event, supporting me with everything from sewing my dress to sorting out my makeup and hair.

When I made the decision to switch universities, my parents objected again. They gave me an ultimatum: study where they wanted or pay for everything myself. Fortunately, my friends rallied around me during that difficult time. I stayed at their places, and they made sure I had what I needed while I saved up my earnings to afford my tuition.

Throughout my life, my friends have never failed metheyve supported me in countless ways. They chipped in towards my mortgage, joined forces to renovate my house, and looked after me when I was unwell. Meanwhile, my parents and brother didnt lift a finger to help in any of those situations. Despite their claims that family should be your unwavering source of support, I havent spoken to them in four years now. The truth is, theres not really a reason for this, as my friends have been my real familyalways ready with support and a shoulder to lean on, standing beside me in times of need. My family now consists of six people: four friends from school and two from university, and I’m truly grateful for their presence in my life.
