When my brother turned eighteen last month, he caught us all off guard with an announcement he wanted to marry his girlfriend, Charlotte. Our parents were anything but pleased to hear this. Theyd never really approved of Charlotte, mostly because of her poor manners and lack of attention to her studies. She was enrolled at college but barely turned up to her lectures, which absolutely infuriated my parents. They were convinced she was a bad influence, always distracting my brother from his work.
Charlottes rude behaviour and her rather careless way of dressing only fuelled my parents disapproval. Even her own family disapproved of the relationship and didnt want my brother coming round their home. Despite them having lived together for two years, Charlotte hadnt managed to do or say anything to convince our parents otherwise.
Frustrated by my parents objections, my brother stood his ground firmly, saying he wouldnt give up on the woman he loved just because they didnt approve. Personally, I felt indifferent towards Charlotte, yet I worried that her presence might spark more tension at home. My brother still lived with us, while Charlotte lived with her mum, stepdad, and younger sister. Since they couldnt afford their own place, my brother suggested Charlotte move in with us, into his bedroom.
Things came to a head when Dad made some harsh comments, questioning how they thought they could live in an empty room without proper furniture and demanding my brother pay all the expenses himself. My brother didnt take this well, and in response, he demanded his share of the house and stormed out with nothing but a small backpack. For a few weeks, they drifted from one friends sofa to another, until finally, they returned togetherdetermined to stay together, no matter what.
My brother then shocked our parents by declaring his intention to sell his share of the flat, almost threatening to cut ties if they didnt accept Charlotte. This escalated into another heated argument, and he stormed out once more. Apparently, Charlottes mother might have encouraged this bold move, since she had some legal connections and could have offered advice. I tried to act as peacemaker, hoping for some way to restore calm in our family, but both my parents and my brother didnt want me to interfere and told me to mind my own business.
Its such a difficult situation, and I keep hoping that with more time, understanding, and conversations, we might be able to find a way to bring back some peace and unity in our family.
