When my brother turned eighteen last month, he startled us with a sudden announcementhe wished to marry his girlfriend, Emily. Our parents, however, were far from thrilled by this turn of events. They had never approved of Emily, dismayed by her discourteous manners and lack of focus on her studies. She was enrolled at college, but rarely made an appearance in her lectures, something which greatly unnerved my parents. They were convinced she was a poor influence on my brother, leading him away from academic pursuits.
Emilys rude behaviour and her habit of dressing carelessly, in ways our parents deemed entirely improper for a young lady, only reinforced their disapproval. Even her own family disapproved of the relationship, and preferred she kept her distance from their home. Throughout the two years they had been together, Emily had yet to show my parents any redeeming qualities that might have changed their minds.
Angered by my parents objections, my brother stood firm, declaring he had no intention of giving up on the girl he loved for their sake. Personally, I harboured no strong feelings for or against Emily, but I feared her presence might create lasting rifts in our family. My brother was still living at home, while Emily stayed with her mother, stepfather, and younger sister. As they couldnt afford a place of their own, my brother suggested Emily move in with us and share his bedroom.
Matters came to a head when our father made some sharp remarks, questioning how they might manage to live in a bare room, devoid of proper furnishings, and insisting my brother cover all related expenses. In response, my brother took a stand, demanding his share of the house, before abruptly leaving with little more than a small rucksack. For several weeks, the two of them drifted from one friends place to another until, in the end, they returned together, resolute in their decision to remain by each others side no matter what.
My brother caused another shock when he declared to our parents that he intended to sell his share of the house, hinting that he was ready to sever ties if they could not respect his choice. This led to a tense confrontation, and off he went once again. It appeared that Emilys mother might have encouraged this drastic step, as she possessed some knowledge of legal matters and could have guided them. I tried to step in and mediate, hoping to restore some peace, but both my parents and my brother rebuffed my involvement, telling me in no uncertain terms to keep out of it.
It was a distressing time, and even now, looking back, I hope that with patience, understanding, and conversation, we might eventually find a way to bring harmony back to our family.
