My mums 73 now. Shes actually quite modern for her age, always up and about really active. She was married to my dad for forty years and honestly, we couldnt have dreamt of a better family to be born into.
Mum and Dad adored each other, so when she was 63 and Dad passed away, it nearly broke her. We all rallied round, did everything we could to help. We even offered for her to come and live with one of us, but she kept saying no. Shed say shes got her mates nearby, and she wanted to stay in the same cosy flat shed shared with Dad.
With the years, the pain softened. Talking about Dad stopped bringing tears to Mums eyes; the conversations turned lighter. Wed just sit at the table, chat about happy times, and it felt like Mum was a little younger somehow.
So, one weekend, my brother and I, our families too, went to visit Mum. And she greeted us at the door, telling us there was a man in the housea friend of hersand that we should all be polite to him. Totally caught us off guard. Mum had always insisted she wasnt interested in another relationship.
You know how it is, right? Shed always say, Why would I want to start nursing a bloke at my age? She preferred living alone, was adamant she didnt need a man at all. And here she is, with a friend at the table. Adult as we are, we can read between the lines. It wasnt just friendship; clearly something was going on. We didn’t quite know what to say to Mum it didnt sit right with us but, to be fair, she’s lived a full life. Shes old enough to make her own choices about this sort of thing. If she does want a relationship, well stand by her. No question.
We sat down to tea, and the bloke’s name was Edward. Looked around 60, had thick black hair, dressed in a smart suitcouldve passed for a businessman. But turns out, he was just a regular pensioner. Very chatty, cracking jokes and telling funny stories all through tea. The odd thing was, he never let on anything about himself. Every time we tried to ask, hed steer the conversation away. Basically, none of us liked him much. To top it off, right off the bat he asked my brother for money. That set all the alarm bells ringing. We saw straight through it, just not sure Mum did.
Mum, bless her heart, actually got teary and asked my brother if he could lend him some moneyand he did. Two days later, we get this call. Turns out Edwards daughter rang to warn usapparently her dads a con artist. He picks out older ladies living alone, charms them, and basically lives off their pensions. As soon as the money dries up, he disappears. She says hes already done this to ten other women.
I told my brother right away, he tried ringing Edward, but the phone was switched off. We even checked the address Edward gave usit was fake and other people lived there. In the end, my brother lost a bit of cash and Mum ended up totally heartbroken. Just a mess, honestly.
