My Mother-in-Law’s Birthday Is on January 1st, So We Went to Visit Her—and Suddenly She Asked Us

Victoria, are you expecting?

Ive always had a wonderful relationship with my mother-in-law, Margaret. My husband and I have been married for seventeen years and we have two sons. Towards the end of last year, I discovered I was expecting our third child. I wanted to share the news with Margaret on her birthday, which falls on the 1st of January, but I was quite anxious.

Our family had been living alone in a modest two-bedroom flat, just enough room for the four of us. At that time, I was already thirty-eight years old rather late for a pregnancy, as people often say. To be honest, I feared Margaret might judge me, whether for the cramped living arrangements or my age.

But I had to gather myself on her birthday, ready or not.

We visited Margaret, and almost immediately, she called me into the kitchen to lend a hand. The truth is, shes such a wise woman, and it seems she noticed everything right away. I didnt even have to explain she understood before I could say a word.

Her intuition astonished me, but her reaction was even more surprising. Margaret was absolutely delighted and confessed she had been longing for a granddaughter for quite some time.

And so, with Margarets blessing, I brought a daughter into the world that summer. For the third time, my mother-in-law was immensely helpful, looking after the baby and supporting us in every way she could. I cherished her deeply, always treating her as if she were my own mother.

Soon enough, winter rolled round again and we found ourselves back at Margarets for her birthday, now with our little princess in tow. Since Margaret had started baking so much, we decided to gift her a proper oven.

As the celebration came to an end, my family and I were preparing to head home, but Margaret stopped us for a moment. She asked for our attention and made an announcement.

Margaret explained how grateful she was to us for her dear granddaughter, and wanted to show her thanks. She said she would move into our flat, but wished to gift us her two-bedroom flat. I was utterly speechless. It proved once again I was lucky indeed to have such a wise and good-hearted mother-in-law, who became not only a mentor but a true friend to me something rare in life.

We continue to live, happy and harmonious. I look up to Margaret and hope, one day, to gain just a fraction of her wisdom.
