I ran into an old college friend and asked what she was up to these days. I had just retired, and life seemed to have paused. But her response pleasantly surprised me.
“My life only began after sixty,” she said. “I have all the time in the world to do what I’ve always wanted. I’d never been abroad before, but now I’ve traveled all over Europe. I hate winters, so I vacation in Mexico during that time. Would you like to join me?” she offered.
“But retirement funds are so small, how can we afford it?” I replied.
“I save up. When summer rolls around, I collect various berries and mushrooms and sell them at the farmer’s market. The money I make, I set aside for traveling. Join me, it’ll be more fun.”
I don’t pay attention to my own aches and pains and don’t run to doctors since pharmacies would eat up all my savings. I live a healthy lifestyle. I walk a lot.
So we started going for walks in the forest every day when the weather was nice. Such a walk is beneficial for health. And I always bring something nutritious home – berries, mushrooms, or medicinal herbs for tea.
Then I started doing a bit of yoga. I trained my muscles a bit. I became more lively and energetic. I forgot what headache pills were.
Recently, we met the leader of a church choir. We got to talking, and he invited us to join the choir. I really wanted to see how I would fit in.
We started singing. The choir director is very pleased with us. So we became part of a friendly team that also organizes various trips to interesting places in the US.
So, my life only began after sixty. Before that, I was only concerned with work and couldn’t afford to do the like.
As I realized, it’s important not to stay at home but keep moving, and something interesting will always cross your path.
