My husband left me for my sister. He went to live with her. And then, three years later, he abandoned her as wellfor her closest friend.
We’d been married for seven years. Our marriage was far from perfect, but it wasnt dreadful either. We had a normal life: jobs, a home, family Sunday dinners. My sister was often with us, always close by. Id never noticed anything unusual between them. On the contrary, it seemed natural that they got on well. Sometimes shed stay for lunch; other times Id ring her for a helping hand, since I worked all day. Never in my wildest thoughts did I suspect anything.
One utterly ordinary Thursday, he left early, saying he was off to work. He missed lunch. Then he missed supper. He never came home that night, nor the next. On the third day, when he finally answered my call, he didnt apologise or explain. He merely said, Im not coming back. I need some space. I assumed it was a midlife crisis, that hed gone to a mates. But the truth caught up soon enough. That very week, some relative finally spoke the words no one wanted to utter: hed moved in with my sister.
The rumour quickly became fact. My parents found out, then uncles, neighbours. My sister stopped picking up the phone. He no longer appeared near our home. Not long after, while I was out, she came round and collected her things. No explanations ever came. Everyone simply acted as if there was nothing left to say.
They began living together in another part of town. Soon enough, they even started attending family gatheringsgatherings I stopped attending. My sister would say, You cant choose who you love. These things just happen. Hed say he simply hadnt been happy with me. I was left alonewith humiliation and heartache. Thankfully, there were no children, or else the pain mightve been unbearable.
Three years passed. I carried on the best I could. They seemed to remain togetheror so it appeared. Then one day, as before, the news reached me through others. Theyd split. He had moved on yet again. And now he was with my sisters best frienda woman whod been there from the very start, whod known everything, been a confidante to us all.
My sister was crushed. He changed his address, his version of events, and his explanations yet again. This time, he claimed he had been unhappy with her, too, saying she was to blame, muddled. But by now, no one believed a word.
To this day, our family is still fractured. I have no relationship with my sister. She no longer speaks to her former best friend. As for him, hes never once apologised. Hes never taken responsibility.
Is this fate’s reckoning?
