So, youre not going to believe this, but my husband actually left me for my sister. He moved straight in with her. And would you believe itthree years later, he left her too, for her best friend!
Wed been married for seven years. Our marriage wasnt perfect, but it wasnt awful, either. It was pretty normal, you know? Work, home, family, Sunday roasts with everyone together. My sister, Emily, she was always around ourspopping by, staying for lunch, helping out if I was knackered after work. Nothing ever seemed off to me; in fact, they got along well, which I thought was great. Sometimes shed stick around for a cuppa, and other times Id call her for a bit of help. I honestly had no idea what was brewing.
Then, on what started as an absolutely ordinary Thursday, he left for work early. Didnt come home for lunch, which was odd. Then he didnt come back that evening. Or the next day. On the third day, when he finally answered his phone, he didnt apologise or even try to explain. He just said, Im not coming back. I need space. I thought maybe he was having a bit of a wobble and had gone to stay with a mate. But by the end of the week, family started telling me what no one wanted to spell out: he was living with Emily.
The rumour was true. Nobody could ignore itnot my parents, not my uncles, not the neighbours. Emily stopped answering my calls altogether. And he never came near our house again. A few days later, she came round when she knew Id be out and picked up all her things. No one explained a single thing. Everyone just sort of accepted it and moved on, as if there was nothing left to discuss.
They set up house in another part of the city. Not long after, they started showing up at family get-togethers, which, obviously, I stopped going to. Emily said things like, You cant choose who you fall for, as if that made it all alright, and he would say he hadnt been happy with me for ages. I was left on my ownashamed, rejected, and hurting. I cant tell you how relieved I was that we didnt have any kids; that would have made it all so much worse.
Anyway, three years went by and I just tried to get on with things. As far as I knew, they were still together. Then one day, I heard through the grapevine that hed moved out. Not just on his ownhed run off with Charlotte, Emilys best mate, the one whod been around since the beginning and knew every sordid detail. The one whod been Emilys shoulder to cry on.
Emily was utterly wrecked. Hed done the same thing to her as he had to menew house, new excuses, new version of events. This time he told people he hadnt been happy with Emily either, blamed her for everything, claimed she was all over the place. Only this time, no one really believed a word he said.
Now, my familys still in tatters. I dont speak to Emily anymore. She doesnt talk to Charlotte, her former best friend. And my ex? Hes never apologised or taken responsibilityjust carried on as if nothing ever happened.
Sometimes I wonderis this what people mean when they talk about karma?
