As long as I can remember, my grandmother always called me a stranger, not her native. Why she decided so, I do not know. After all, outwardly I am a copy of my father, not my mother. Most likely, these suspicions, which grew into confidence, arose because my parents moved from the village to the city.
My father was the first to leave, and then, six months later, my mother moved to him. She arrived already pregnant. So my grandmother suspected my mother of adultery. I was deprived of the love of my grandparents. As a child, I did not understand why. Why do they not love me?
My mother was naturally offended by such attitude to me and to herself. She often quarreled with my father because of the slander of my mother-in-law. But my father preferred to remain neutral and never stood up for me.
Then my sister was born. My grandparents loved her very much. They bought her different things and presents. They never bought me anything. But my sister and I were very friendly, loved each other and never quarreled. Having received another sweet, candy or gingerbread, she immediately came to me to share.
Years passed, I grew up, graduated from the university at the Faculty of Law. Now I work in a law office. I earn well, save for a mortgage. The other day, my grandmother came to me at work.
– Granddaughter, dear, – she began her story, – Steven was arrested. Help me get him out of there.
Steven is her youngest son, my uncle, four years older than me. As a child, this same Steven, repeating after his mother, called me a “bastard”, teased and mocked me in every possible way.
– So, already a “granddaughter”, – I said, – how come you have become a “native granddaughter”, since I have become a “bastard” from a “bastard”. You and your son insulted and mocked me all my childhood, and now you came for help? I will not help you. Go to another lawyer.
My grandmother left offended. I have no conscience. I have no conscience at all. I do not want to help those who insulted and humiliated me and my mother, for no reason at all, all my life.
