My granddaughter blurted out something at Sunday family dinner that stopped everyone mid-forkful.
Wed all gathered in our usual fashionmy daughter, son-in-law, the two little ones, and myself. Nothing out of the ordinary, just shepherds pie and a lot of chat about school, work, and summer holidays.
Then, right as I was eyeing the last Yorkshire pudding, my daughter said something that felt a bit peculiar. She mentioned, in the gentlest way, that maybe we should see each other a bit less often.
She wasnt rudejust terribly polite about it, as if suggesting that I take up knitting instead of haunting her kitchen.
Her reasoning was that the kids were getting older and needed to learn how to be more independent. She added that if I was always around, the family relied on me for everythingfrom sorting out sibling squabbles to finding missing socks. I just nodded and listened, swallowing my roast dinner as quietly as possible.
At that point, my youngest granddaughter, whos an eight-year-old whirlwind named Daisy, lifted her head from her plate and piped up with something nobody saw coming.
Why doesnt Mum want Grandma to come over? she asked, completely innocent.
The table went tragically silent. My daughter attempted a smile, saying it wasnt quite what Daisy thought, but Daisy kept going. Apparently, when Im there, everyone is calmer, Mum doesnt shout as much, Dad laughs more, and the house looks nicer (presumably not just because I fold the tea towels).
Nobody said a word. My daughter just stared at her mashed potatoes as if they held the answers to all lifes problems.
Right then, I realised something rather profound. Adults invent mountains of explanations, but children see straight through to the heart of things.
Later on, after dinner, my daughter pulled me aside. She admitted she may have been a bit unfair and that sometimes, we forget just how much someone’s presence matters.
I didnt get cross. I simply told her one thing Ive learned over the years: Love doesnt clutter up a homeits what makes a home.
