My Father Refused to Marry My Mother Because His Family Insisted on Taking Long Holidays

When my grandmother discovered that her daughtermy motherwas expecting a child without being married, she was deeply upset. She made my mother’s life unbearable, but my mother endured the turmoil quietly and patiently.

On my birthday, Grandmother locked my mother inside the house and left, taking the key with her. Fortunately, my aunt, a former paramedic, happened to be there, managed to grab the key, and rushed to help my mother. Thats how I came into the world, and despite the difficult circumstances, my mother showered me with love. My grandmother, who was by then quite elderly, taught me all sorts of gardening and farming skills. Although I sometimes excelled, whenever I made mistakes, shed scold me harshly, using words I didnt fully understand at the time, but I sensed they were meant to sting. I couldnt grasp why she treated me that way, why I wasnt loved or what I had done wrong. She herself had struggled to raise a child after her husband passed away, so she ought to have understood how hard it was. I grew up without any male affectionno grandfather, no father, no brother.

Later on, my mother married and had two more children, but sadly her husband didnt live long. Surprisingly, Grandmother lavished those children with far more affection than she ever offered me. I couldnt help but feel jealous.

Grandmother passed away long ago and Im no longer a child, but every now and then I remember those years, feeling different from everyone else. Her harsh words still linger in my memory, reviving old emotions.

One day, while shopping with my mother in our local village shop, we met a woman buying a carrier bag stuffed with fruit and sweets. She happily shared that her daughter was about to become a mother herself and that her wedding was next week. The entire village knew Victorias daughter wasnt married, but the womans honesty and loving devotion profoundly touched my mother, reminding her of the struggles she faced and the judgments she endured for so many years.

I love my mother and am grateful that she brought me into this world and weathered all those hardships for my sake. She never treated me badly. Her boundless maternal love is pure and genuine.

When it comes to wondering what Id have done if I were in my grandmothers shoes, its hard to say for certain without experiencing the same trials she encountered. Nevertheless, I believe its vitally important to show understanding, empathy, and support towards your daughter, even in difficult times. Love and compassion ought to take precedence, nurturing a strong bond with your child, no matter what life brings.
