You know, I met my husband at a mutual friends wedding in London. At that time, Id just moved to the city and landed myself a job, and honestly? I was absolutely over the moon to finally be out of the countryside. Things between us moved pretty quickly, and within a year, we welcomed our daughter, Emily.
But then, everything shifted.
He started asking, Why is our daughter blonde with blue eyes? Both of us have darker features.
I tried to laugh it off and said, Darling, it must be from your dad. Just look, shes the spitting image of him.
He wasn’t having any of it. Dont be silly. A child should look like their mum or dad, not someone else in the family. My mum also thinks she cant be mine.
Ill be honest, my mother-in-law never liked me from the start. Always had it in her head that I didnt truly love her son. But my father-in-law, Peter, was really lovely. He and my mother-in-law parted ways ages ago; hes got a new family now, but he never forgot about his son.
And then my husband brought another woman into our home. Told me to pack up quickly and leave. I looked around and realised I didnt have much choice.
I truly had nowhere to go. My parents wouldnt have me back with a child theyd be mortified. Plus, the old house back in the village was freezing cold and had no central heating, so living there was out of the question. I called up my best mate, Lauren, who let me and Emily crash with her for a few days. After that, I managed to find a room to rent, and thats where we settled for a while. But money was getting tighter and tighter.
One afternoon, I was in Tesco when I heard someone calling my name.
Girls! Where have you two been hiding? I even drove out to the country to look for you, Peter said.
I gave him a hug, quietly saying, Its nice to see you.
He told me, I know exactly what my son did, and theres no excuse. He and my ex-wife are just as bad Where are you staying now?
Were renting a room, I replied.
Well, I can’t stay long, Ive a job up north. When Im back, Ill help sort out somewhere permanent for you. Here, take this, it should get you through the next couple of weeks, he said, handing me an envelope.
I was so relieved. Could finally buy proper food and milk for Emily.
Peter ended up coming back early and dropped by to visit us. Honestly, he was completely taken aback by the state we were living in. He couldnt have us move in with him his new wife wasnt keen on the idea. But Peter, bless him, found another way: he used all his savings to buy a flat and put it in Emilys name. I tried to refuse such a massive gift, but he insisted. He did it for his granddaughter, not for me.
Within a month, Emily and I started settling into our new little home. Peter brought by furniture and all the essentials, too.
He said, Dont rush to put Emily in nursery she needs her mum. Ill help out, dont worry. And my wifes had a change of heart shed love to meet her granddaughter.
I couldn’t thank him enough.
Dont cry, love, he said gently. You can always ask me for help I wont turn you away. Give it time, and everything will work itself out.
Im just glad Emilys got such a wonderful granddad, even if things with her dad didnt work out. He gave up everything he had to help us out.
Years later, I married again. But I never forgot Peter. Hes always a welcome guest at our place, and we pop round to see him too. Lifes finally fallen into place for us.
