My brother told me that our mother had laid hands on his wife, and straight away, I sensed something was seriously amiss.
While we were on holiday, Mum rang me, absolutely beside herself. She couldn’t stop crying, completely distraught. After we hung up, I rang my brother to get to the bottom of what had happened. To my surprise, he was quite short with me, insisting I ask Mum myself, saying I ought to know exactly why she was so upset. He added that she got exactly what she deserved. Unsure and worried, my husband and I decided to cut our holiday short. Tickets back home cost us a small fortune, but we rushed back regardless.
When we arrived, Mum was still in tears, unable to settle. I made her a cup of tea and gave her something to help calm her nerves. Eventually, she told us the dreadful story. Apparently, shed come home from work to find my sister-in-law covered in bruises. Knowing she was expecting a baby, Mum was even more concerned. She hurried over, gave her a comforting hug, and asked what had happened. At that very moment, my brother walked in, only for his wife to jump up, shriek and accuse Mum of attacking her.
Mum stood there, dumbfounded, unable to understand what was going on. My brother, convinced by his wife’s outburst, was horrified and told our mother to get out of the house at once. Later, he took his wife to hospital, and heartbreakingly, she lost the baby. He shut us all out, refused to discuss it, and continued to blame our mother. Despite all this, something in my gut told me the story didnt add up. I trusted my mothers version of events. Thankfully, the truth finally surfaced, though from a totally unexpected source.
It was one of my sister-in-laws friendsa thoroughly decent womanwho reached out and explained everything. She told me that my sister-in-law had orchestrated the whole scene to turn my brother against Mum and have her thrown out. She had even intentionally ended her own pregnancy. When my brother finally learned the truth, he was furious and threw his wife out. The most touching part was how he apologised to Mum, truly remorseful.
And yet, a mothers heart is always generous. In spite of such a nightmare, my mum welcomed her son home again with open arms and a loving embrace.
